AVAZ Project Report

They say that technology is fast killing the old ways, in that email, social networking sites and apps like WhatsApp are replacing good old snail mail. But there are many advantages to using modern technology and apps. AVAZ is an app that provides an alternative system of communication for people with speech difficulties, such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It is a research-based program that aids the development of a child’s language and intent to communicate. It can be used by children with ASD, cerebral palsy, down syndrome or any other communication difficulties. The app helps children transition from pictures to text and you can even add your own pictures to the already existing picture vocabulary that Avaz provides. The saying "A picture speaks a thousand words" is apt for a child who has difficulties with verbal communication.

Most children are comfortable and adept with the use of technology. This is evident in how quickly they teach themselves to open and find their favourite songs or videos on their parents’ smart phones! Hence, even those with special needs can learn to use Avaz. In addition, it is portable and can be customized to suit any individual’s needs.

With the support of Goa Sudharop, we at Sethu have been able to introduce Avaz to a multitude of children. We have observed an increase in children's understanding and communication and a decrease in inappropriate behaviours.

Sethu would like to thank Goa Sudharop who have given children with long-standing verbal communication difficulties a voice through Avaz.
